Client Requirement: Our client provides logistics and transportation services to several mining companies. To maintain the high standards of their service, our client has a special protocol regarding tire wear, which is much stricter than the standard required by the transport regulations.
Our client asked for advice on how to align this internal protocol with the regulations on handling and disposal of ELT.
Our participation: Despite the assumption contained in the request (that the used tires that our client wanted to dispose should be considered as ELT), we started the analysis by reviewing if those used tires should indeed be considered as ELT. After a carefully analysis, we found that due to the low level of wear and tear, those tires should not be considered as end-of-life items to be disposed. On the contrary, under the principles of circular economy and waste minimization, they should be considered as Second Use Tires.
Client benefit: The client, thanks to our advice, was able to correctly align its internal procedures with compliance with the specific ELT handling and disposal regulations (where applicable), and to maintain most of the protocols that were already in place, thus generating a benefit both in terms of cost savings and the improvement of a reuse system that was in line with the objectives of our regulation.
